Since the water wheel stopped
A corn mill, a river and far too many grinders
We kept the millrace running under the floor. You can hear it from the corner table if the room is quiet.
The mill ground oats and barley for the parish from 1834 until 1961, when the wheel seized and nobody could justify fixing it. It sat empty for the best part of fifty years, holding pigeons and old fertiliser bags.
We took it on in 2019 and spent a year taking lime plaster off stone. The grain chute is still in the ceiling above the pastry case. The roaster sits where the drying kiln was, because that is the only part of the floor rated for the weight.
Everything we serve is made here or bought within the county, apart from the coffee, which comes a good deal further. We roast on Tuesdays, we bake every morning at five, and we close when we say we close.
